Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Roberto Velasco, embarked on his inaugural official visit to China, engaging in talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The primary objective of the visit was to fortify the political and economic relationship between the two nations amidst ongoing trade tensions. Discussions were centered around enhancing cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and academic realms, with Mexico underscoring the principles of mutual respect, equal sovereignty, and non-interference.
The meeting between the two foreign ministers also highlighted the importance of bolstering the political consultation mechanism between their respective ministries. This initiative aims to ensure regular dialogue and the pursuit of tangible agreements. Mexico pinpointed several key areas ripe for collaboration, including health, education, scholarships, science and technology, environmental protection, rural development, and cultural exchanges.
A backdrop to the discussions was the current trade tensions, primarily due to Mexico’s recent introduction of higher tariffs in January on imports from countries lacking free-trade agreements, including China. These tariffs, which can reach up to 50% across various sectors, have been a point of contention, with China questioning the measures. However, Mexico has clarified that the tariffs are not directed at any specific nation.
Velasco also took the opportunity to emphasize the collaborative efforts between Mexico and China in multilateral platforms such as the G20 and APEC. He expressed appreciation for China’s role as the host of the forthcoming APEC leaders’ summit scheduled in Shenzhen this November. This aligns with the broader objective of fostering cooperation on the international stage.
Cultural exchanges were another critical topic of discussion, with plans for a significant exhibition of Mexican archaeological and artistic works at the Shanghai Museum. Additionally, Velasco’s itinerary includes the inauguration of Mexico’s new consulate in Chongqing, further cementing the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
