The United States has taken a significant step in its ongoing battle against international crime by officially labeling Brazil’s two largest criminal organizations, the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command, as foreign terrorist entities. This designation comes in response to their extensive involvement in drug trafficking and organized crime, which pose substantial threats to regional security.

Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, emphasized the severity of the threat posed by these groups, noting their violent nature and their expanded reach across Latin America and into the US. This classification aligns the PCC and Red Command with other criminal organizations in the region that have been similarly designated in the past.

Originating within Brazil’s prison system, both the PCC and Red Command have evolved into formidable transnational crime syndicates. They are significantly involved in the movement of cocaine from neighboring countries to markets in North America and Europe, highlighting their role in the global drug trade.

Despite Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s opposition to the US designation, which he argues could infringe on Brazil’s sovereignty and undermine its existing measures against organized crime, the country has intensified its efforts against these groups. Recently, Brazilian authorities have undertaken new operations targeting the PCC, focusing on their alleged infiltration into the financial sector.

This US decision is expected to reverberate through Brazil’s political landscape, particularly as the country approaches its presidential elections. While some opposition figures have praised the move as a necessary international stance against organized crime, analysts are evaluating its potential repercussions on financial transactions and regional security collaboration.
