From Battlefield to Shipping Lanes: Ukraine War Expands in Scope

Kyiv – The scope of the war in Ukraine appears to be expanding from the traditional battlefield to the world’s shipping lanes, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russia of using oil tankers for military purposes.
Zelenskyy claimed that Russia is using its commercial tanker fleet not only to fund its war effort but also for “reconnaissance and even sabotage activities.” This allegation suggests a significant development in Russia’s military strategy, blending civilian and military operations.
Despite the novelty of the threat, Zelenskyy conveyed a message of preparedness. He announced that Ukraine is collaborating with its partners to address the issue, stating with certainty that “it is entirely possible to stop this.”
This new front emerged as Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated gains in the conventional war. He stated that his forces have taken control of nearly 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025, giving Moscow the “complete strategic initiative.”
Putin also issued a grave warning to the United States, stating that the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would be a major escalation. He claimed it would require U.S. military involvement and would cause an irreparable breakdown in their bilateral relationship.
