President Donald Trump described his meeting with Xi Jinping as “amazing,” as the two leaders sealed a one-year deal covering technology, tariffs, and future state visits.
The pact includes a US agreement to slash some tariffs and export controls. Crucially, the US also agreed to postpone a new measure for one year that would have blocked thousands of Chinese firms from accessing US technology, a major concession to Beijing.
In return, China agreed to buy US soybeans and to pause any new restrictions on the export of rare earth minerals. This commitment on rare earths led Trump to back off his threat of a 100% import tax.
The two leaders also announced a diplomatic exchange. Trump said he would visit China in April, and Xi would visit the US, possibly in Florida or Washington, D.C., at a later date.
Following the meeting, President Xi spoke at the APEC forum in South Korea. He called for “genuine multilateralism” and urged nations to “join hands” to protect supply chains, stating dialogue is “always better than confrontation.”
